Private Lessons
Private Lessons are offered to all ages. In a Private Lesson, the guest pays a premium to book an instructor for a period of time to work one-on-one or just with their group. We’ll typically tell people that if a student has one particular skill they want to master, or they are looking to move through the progression at their own rate then a private lesson is the way to go. Coaches working in this area are expected to teach all ages. Lessons can vary from one hour to five hours! The Private Lessons Supervisor will give you assignments, breaks, and tasks through the day.
If a guest specifically request a Private Lesson with a particular instructor this is known as a Private Request and the instructor earns an hourly bonus.
You can also turn a regular Private Lesson (known as an Assignment) into a request. For instance, if a guest has booked a Private for 2 hours, and you encourage them to tack on an hour and make it a 3-hour lesson, the guest just pays the difference and you know earn Request Pay for the full 3 hours! The availability of this is dependent on the rest of your work schedule that day. Please bring the guest in to check on availability before promising them another hour. Nice work!
Location
Private Lessons operate from the Private Lesson Office in the Ski and Snowboard School Building. This is located on the east side of the building and is open daily. We handle all Private Lesson reservations through this office and all lessons meet their instructor, start, and end in the Private Lesson meeting area just outside of this office.
Programs to know:
Working in Privates
Private Lessons require a high level of professionalism and time management. Every day will be different with lessons starting a different times and a variation of students ages and levels. There may be times when you teach lessons ‘back-to-back’ i.e. one lesson finishes right as another one begins. When working here you will also be expected to each every age group. Private lessons are great for those that don’t fit into a specific age category we offer group lessons for, so toddlers and seniors are common here.
Check-in
As always, the first thing to do is to Check-in on the computer so that we know you are here and to double check the start time of your first activity.
Support
No matter where you are assigned for the day, you can always be assigned for Support. This is the same for all staff members, and it is expected that if you are on the schedule for support, you understand that we are counting on you! For Private Lessons, this may include helping get the carpets ready, assisting in booting in one of our rental shops, greeting, and more. Your schedule will tell you who to check-in with and where to go when assigned to support.
Line-Up
If you are assigned to a 9:00am private, you will receive that information at 8:45am from the Private Lesson Coordinator for the day.
If you are unbooked or open, i.e. you have no Private Lessons scheduled, then throughout the day you will continue to check-in at quarter to every hour. So you check in at 10:45am, 11:45am and so on, until you are booked on a lesson, reassigned, or released. You are paid 15 minutes for every hour you check-in. The rest of that hour is your own. Plan to have some support work during these 15 minutes to keep the office running smoothly!
Ending the Lesson
When your lesson is getting ready to conclude, you and your client(s) will want to decide if you want to continue on with your lesson or wrap it up. If your student has more to learn and would benefit from at least another hour, you will want to suggest an upgrade. If this is something they are interested in, bring them into the Private Lesson office to see if you are available to keep going. When the lesson is truly ready to end, you can wrap-up the lesson by going over what they’ve learned, what they should practice, and what you’ll work on next time they take a lesson with you. For kids, feel free to utilize the Youth Programs Progress reports so parents will know where they fit in!
Remember that all this should happen so that your lesson can finish no later than on the dot. A 2 hour Private Lesson beginning at 10am should be wrapped up and done at 12pm. While you may release private lessons anywhere, the general practice is to end outside the Private Lesson office. It is especially important to establish an ending location when teaching children whose parents are picking them up after the lesson.
To stay on the Private Book and keep getting the opportunity to generate requests and build your client base you need to prove that you are a reliable and enthusiastic so we can have confidence in booking you.
After Lessons
You’ll keep checking-in on the private book until you are released by the private lesson coordinator. You may be reassigned to another location or released for the day. In privates, you are paid through the day. Unlike in other departments, you’ll initial your sup sheet through the day, not at the end of the day. Make sure it is accurate before initialing.
