The Word – 1/3/17

Happy New Year! ‘Tis the season for the end of the Holiday Madness! A HUGE thanks to everyone that worked so hard over the past two weeks, we really appreciate it and are so proud of our team effort!! Let’s take this week to recover, rest, and take some freeride laps! 🙂 You all deserve it!

SSS: INSTRUCTORS + STAFF

Multi-Week Schedule: Multi-weeks are upon us! Make sure to double check your schedule and see if you have been placed in an upcoming program. All Basecamp/Highcamp coaches should have received an email outlining some important info heading into the weekend. Please contact the Aussie if you have any questions or concerns. (Aka: David O’Donnell)

Clinics: Looking to obtain a terrain park pass? Interested in becoming a certified instructor? There will be various clinics with various topics going out regularly Fri-Sun afternoons! Check RTP to sign up! Remember, clinics are open to all staff positions not limited to just instructors!

Locker Room Reminders: Please stop moving/borrowing/taking things that are not yours.. it is considered stealing! I’m sure you wouldn’t enjoy coming to work with your boots missing, so let’s remember to be considerate of other’s belongings. We highly encourage everyone to label your own gear so it does not get confused with any one else.

Still can’t find something? Found something that doesn’t seem to have an owner? Remember our updated “jail” location? See this previous post of The Word with more details.

MOUNTAIN WIDE UPDATES

Holiday Coupons: Are still here! We have a boxfull in either Sydney or Lauren’s office– come pick them up and give them out to your friends to come ride with you!

Bunkhouse Reminder: Please remember to sign in appropriately the morning of the start of your stay! The sign in sheet lives in the locker room outside of Sydney’s office. The door code has changed after this holiday period, check the sign in sheet for details. Please treat our bunkhouse with the respect you would your own home- clean up after yourself, do your own dishes, take your shoes off at the door, etc.

Transit Updates: Post-holiday transit schedules can be found posted in the locker room and downloaded here.

New Info

  • NEW: Parking is no longer allowed at Zekes on the West Side. The owner has notified Stevens Pass that violators cars will be towed.
  • There will be NO night transit for night operations on Wednesdays or Thursdays. IMPORTANT: if you are scheduled for Wednesday or Thursday night shifts, please ensure you have your own transportation to and from the mountain.
  • We are still trying to find drivers with availability after 4:45pm. Please contact Human Resources or Manny Villalvazo, Parking, Security, Snow Removal & Transit Manager, at ext 4141 if you are interested in driving vans for us.

Guest Visits and NPS Score Update: After our busiest time of the season here are some updated numbers to our mountain wide goals (remember our end of season bonus is attached to the end result of these scores!)

Guest Visits

In the month of December we surpassed our planned visit numbers. As of Dec 31st we are at over 119,000 visits for the season. Great job to everyone. End of season goal = 415,000 visits.

NPS Score

The NPS score or Net Promoter Score is based on the question: “On a scale of 1 to 10, how likely are you to recommend SP to friends & family?” As of Dec 31st we are at an average score of 8.7. We have a whole season to bump this up to our goal of 9.0!

27 Dec

The Word – 12/27/16

Hey Everyone! What a great holiday weekend and a strong kick start to our busiest week on mountain all season! Keep up the great work, enthusiasm, and flexibility that we’ve seen over these past few days and let’s continue to pull together as a team to finish out the week!

Remember to take care of yourself this week so we don’t all end up looking like this furry guy!

SSS: INSTRUCTORS & STAFF

Teach Skis for Sale: If you are interested in purchasing some smaller sized skis aka “teach skis” from a size range of 130-160 these will be available in our rental shop- please find either Cameron or Brian there at a convenient time. Sold on a first come, first serve basis!

Multi-Week Schedule: Check your schedules! This coming week starts our first evening multi-week so check your schedule to see if you’re on it. If you’re also interested in picking up these evening hours, please let us know and we’d be happy to include you!

Evening Private Lessons: We have been getting some inquiries for later lessons Fri-Sun, between the times of 4-6pm… if anyone is interested in working the private book for these times please let us know! It’s a great way to start ramping up your private lesson clientele as well!

Locker Room Business: Please remember to clean up after yourselves, this is a community space for us all! Pick up your trash, wash your dishes, and don’t forget your gear outside the locker room or else we’ll find a nice hiding spot for it 😉

Private Lesson Office Policies: All private lesson instructors should be sure to check the whiteboard in the locker room every morning to see if there’s going to be a morning line-up at 8:45am. Additionally, every private lesson instructor needs to check in with Jess or Katelyn 15 minutes before every hour. We can assign non-teach work for those 15 minutes such as helping boot customers, clearing our walk ways, etc.

We ask that before you take out a private lesson, ensure that your guest has paid for the lesson, has an access pass, and has filled out a liability form. As a reminder, every guest that uses the mountain must have an access pass. We’re using the term “access pass” vs “lift ticket” as each guest needs a pass, even to ride the carpets! Please make sure to end your lesson on time unless we have instructed you differently, for your next lesson may be waiting on you.

Please help us uphold our new office policies! Instructors can no longer use the door between the private lesson office and the locker room. Please enter through the front office doors in uniform and avoid entering the space behind the cashiers. Use the computer in the locker room to check your schedule for the day!

Flow Zone Update

Is this a slide zone or a talk zone??? Each feature in the flow zone has a runout, and that space needs to be clear before new people can enter the feature. Be Aware of where you stop your group. It is easy to clog up the Flow.

Check out these diagrams for Station 2 and Station 3 to know where to stop without disrupting the flow. Any feedback on the Flow Zone please email steve.frink@stevenspass.com

Park SMART Clinics

All coaches are required to have a freestyle check-off before they may teach in the terrain parks. If you had a pass last year, please see Lauren for this seasons park pass. If you haven’t had one in the past or you are a new instructor, you’ll need to sign up for a Park SMART Clinic. To gain access to the small park, you need the Park SMART Clinic plus the Small Park Worksheet. For the Medium and Large parks, you’ll need the clinic (only one per season) and another worksheet for each park plus a ride-along with an approved trainer/manager. These are paid clinics and we expect the majority of our coaches to go through this clinic. We expect everyone in Youth, Privates, and Multi-weeks to go through the clinic so they are ready to take their classes there too!

Exam Prep Clinics

Now that the season has gotten off to a fantastic start it’s time to begin preparing for exams! Many of you have been asking about how the exam process works. All of the level II and III exams are already scheduled for the end of the season. You can find those dates at www.psia-nw.org.

For all of our exam candidates, you must complete at least 20 hours of clinics and 20 hours of teaching in order to qualify for an exam at the end of the year. Clinics will be split between level 100, 200, and 300 and Skiing/Riding or Teaching. The clinic schedule will be in RTP. Trainers will work hard to ensure they are giving you the exam prep you are looking for while tailoring topics to the needs they see out on the snow. You do not have to be trying for an exam in order to participate in clinics but if you are a rookie or someone without their Level I, you’ll want to focus on going to the level 100 clinics as those will benefit you the most to start.

Questions? Email lauren.yaeger@stevenspass.com

Cross-Over Clinics

Want to learn to teach the other discipline We’re hosting a two-part cross-over clinic for skiers who want to snowboard and snowboarders who want to ski! The first of two clinics will take place this Friday, December 29th from 3:30-5:30. You must have the gear and desire in order to participate. We’ll go over the progression and the skills you need to teach first-timer and beginner lessons. This may not automatically increase your payrate to be a dual instructor, but it is a mandatory clinic to have if you are interested in one day becoming a dual! For more details, email lauren.yaeger@stevenspass.com  or sign up in RTP.

RENTALS: REMINDERS…

Way to perform as a team this weekend and the start to this busy mid-week too!! It was awesome to see everyone hustling and helping others out- rental techs, cashiers, instructors, speedy boot fitters, and more! Let’s pull our socks up and hit the ground running to finish out this crazy week as a strong team! Please keep on top of your schedules and let your supervisor know if you are running late or need to call out for the day in the appropriate manner.

The Word – 12/21/16

HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!!

Thank you ALL for your hard work during this holiday madness, we truly appreciate it! As we enter the busiest time of the season please stay rested and healthy so we can all push through this upcoming week as a strong team! As busy as our departments are, do keep in mind, all other departments are feeling the holiday stress too; let’s do our best to be courteous and kind when interacting with our fellow employees on mountain.

SSS: INSTRUCTORS + STAFF

Policy Reminders:

  • Do not use someone else’s equipment! Even if you think you are borrowing it… if they didn’t give you permission, it is stealing!
  • Locker room is for Ski & Snowboard School Staff only. Children under 12 may accompany their guardian into the locker room but must be supervised at all times. Non-employees or staff from other departments may be allowed in the break room portion of the locker room ONLY by permission of a supervisor/manager but NEVER after hours (5:00pm). They may not use our bathrooms.
  • If your uniform gets dirty you may take it to the company store next to HR to be washed. Try and keep jackets in your locker unless you are working the next day and it needs to dry overnight. You may not take our uniform home with you under any circumstances.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest!!

‘Tis the season–break out your best ugly holiday sweater! Wear them any day over this holiday weekend, Thursday-Sunday. We will take a group photo at line ups as your entry into the school contest. We’ll announce winners in next weeks post of The Word and the prizes!!

Holiday Schedules:

We completely understand the desire to spend the holiday’s with family and friends, therefore we are doing our best to match everyone’s request off for the weekend, however we will make these call offs by Friday at the latest. Don’t forget to check your schedules and start times as we enter the busiest week of the season!

Have you lost something??

…Updated “JAIL” location!

items left out in the locker room will end up in Jail. Jail is next to the boot dryer as seen in the photo. Items in Jail are NOT up for grabs! Taking items out of jail that are not your own is stealing Don’t do it. But if you are missing something it will probably be in jail.

As seen in the Locker Room Guidelines right here.

  1. Boots only are allowed on top of lockers. All other equipment and other items must be in your locker when you leave at night, no exceptions.
  2. Take wet personal items home to dry (gloves, layers, socks, etc.). Do not hang your clothes or any items from the pipes. This is a fire code. Hooks on sides of lockers are for drying items during the day only. Wet instructor jackets may stay on the outside of your locker.

Stuff hanging off your lockers is a pain in the butt for the people who have a locker near yours. That is the main reason we have this rule, courtesy to your fellow instructors. As a bonus the locker room looks a lot nicer.

So next time you see a stray pair of goggles getting kicked around the locker room, grab them and hang them in jail so the owner will get them back safely. Please contact steve.frink@stevenspass.comfor questions!

BITS: Reminder that “Back In The Saddle” or BITS clinics for returning instructors are to be completed by Dec 18th! These will be held Fri-Sun this weekend; if you do not get a lesson, or are not scheduled to work please sign up for an appropriate clinic!

Log in: HERE (Remember you need your MTN#, password = rtp2013) Follow the link at the top – Training Clinic Sign Up **Please don’t sign up if you are on the schedule to teach this day!

SHADOWS Reminder that all rookie’s shadows are to be completed by Dec 17th for Full Time Instructors and Dec 23rd for Part Time Instructors! Please get in contact with us by emailing snowsports@stevenspass.com if you are unsure on your next scheduled day to work or do not have your seasons pass yet.

Tuning Bench: Due to too many hot irons causing the smoke alarm to go off and a fire truck to be sent up to the resort, our waxing privilege has been temporarily taken away. We are actively working with our maintenance department to come up with a solution to bring waxing back to the locker room soon!

SSS: STAFF

Locks and Lockers:  If you haven’t yet claimed a locker by writing your name on a locker and telling Lauren or Sydney which locker you are in you must do so by Sunday at 3pm. After that point we’ll be emptying out lockers with no name written on them or not in our school’s records. Also, we’re lifting the restriction on locks! You may now bring your own lock with the understanding that if management needs to get into your locker for any reason we may cut the lock at your expense if we can’t get a hold of you to open it first. Feel free to leave locker combinations with Lauren/Sydney for safe keeping just in case (but please no keys!)

Bunkhouse Reminders: Please make sure to sign in to claim a bed in the bunkhouse– sign in sheet is in the SSS locker room outside of Sydney’s office. This also ensures you are able to obtain an overnight parking pass for your vehicle. Priority goes to those working the next day, so do have other arrangements in mind if there happens to be no space some nights as we go into this holiday period. Bunkhouse Guidelines can be reviewed on the Resources tab of the school website. Any questions please see our Bunkhouse Dad, Ben Christy.

Cashiers: All full timers will be expected to work 6 days each week, Dec. 17th-Jan. 2nd. All part-timers will be expected to give us availability during the week, any help is really needed and hugely appreciated! You guys look like pros out there and each and every one of you have improved greatly! I know we’ve got this together as a team, so let’s do this!

Uniforms are ready, so please stop by HR to get your shirts– You are expected to wear this for the rest of the season.

Reminder as we head into the holidays from December 17th-January 2nd if you are working the day shift your start time is 7:30AM every day.

MOUNTAIN WIDE UPDATES: Holiday and Nights!!

Holiday Madness: It’s that time of year everyone! Starting this weekend, kids are out of school and the holiday craziness will begin. Just a reminder that full timers will be scheduled for 6 days the next two weeks and we appreciate any and all shifts that part timers can add to their schedule. If you can offer days, let us know! This is the time of the season for us all to pull together as a team and to bank hours! Keep on top of your schedule, your energy, and your health so you can do your part!

Night Operations: Starting Friday, Dec 16th, the resort night operations schedule begins!! We will be operating until 10pm on most days over the next couple of weeks. Go here for the full resort opening hours.

Avalanche Hazard:  We’ve been getting some amazing powder recently, but be aware that our current snow pack is not typical for the PNW. This relatively shallow snowpack with unusually cold air is increasing the avalanche hazard. If you are venturing out into the backcountry, be sure to check NWAC site before you go.

http://www.nwac.us/avalanche-forecast/current/cascade-west-stevens-pass/

Sadly, this winter has had its first avalanche fatalities, one at Mt Rose and one in Cooke City Montana. Our patrol blog has more details http://stevenspasspatrol.blogspot.com/
